Wine History
Wine has been part of Lebanese culture since the time of the Phoenicians, who were some of the first to cultivate vines and market wine in the Mediterranean. This rich heritage continues to be a source of pride and a fundamental pillar of the country's wine identity.
Wine Regions
Lebanon has several wine regions that contribute to the diversity of its wines. The most prominent include:
- Bekaa Valley: the heart of Lebanese viticulture, this valley is sheltered by two mountain ranges that create a Mediterranean climate ideal for growing grapes.
- Batroun: In the north, this area is known for its rich soils and varied microclimates that favour the production of wines with great character.
- Jezzine: In the south, it is an emerging region that shows great potential with wines that reflect the rich minerality of its soils.
Grape Varieties
Although Lebanon grows some international varieties, it is its indigenous grapes that stand out:
- Obeideh and Merwah: Traditionally used for the production of Arak, these grapes are also becoming popular in the production of aromatic white wines.
- Cinsault: Introduced during the French mandate, this grape has adapted well to the Lebanese climate and is often blended to create robust and aromatic red wines.
Lebanon's wines are a reflection of their land: rich, varied and full of history. Each bottle tells a story of tradition and modernity, offering wine lovers a unique and enriching experience.
