Arlanza
The Arlanza DO lies just north of the Ribera del Duero DO and although it was founded in 2007, its winemaking tradition dates back to the 10th century and remained strong until the mid-20th century.
Then a strong rural exodus drove the people of the region to the more industrial areas and the region did not recover as a vineyard until 1995, when a group of wine enthusiasts decided to recover the winemaking tradition of Arlanza by obtaining the Vino de la Tierra qualification.
In the deep sandy-clay and granitic soils of the appellation, under the influence of a harsh continental climate, the white varieties Albillo and Viura are grown, as well as the reds Garnacha, Mencía and Tempranillo, the variety used to make the most important wines, red wines similar to those of the Ribera del Duero, but somewhat fresher and with gentler tannins.
