The wine

The small denomination of Pla de Bages, in Cataluña, keeps on improving in quality and delivering amazing wines. Its flagship winery, Abadal, offers us an elegant single varietal Merlot which has all the merits traditionally associated with that particular grape. Five different Merlot clones have been cultivated on five different estates in order to supply as much complexity as possible. The grape, perfectly adapted to the region, shows its best side whilst under the influence of the Pyrenees.

In appearance it already seems pleasant and the aromas can only corroborate what a first glance had suggested. It smells pleasurable, immediately delightful. Discrete toasty notes, mild balsamic touches and hints of ripe plums and cherries, accompanied by the cocoa nuance of the best clay-grown Merlots. On the palate it's rounded, mineral and fresh; it combines profundity and pleasantness, character and docility. A wine for all occasions, long and individual. It grows considerably with a good decanting.

Bodegas Abadal

Masies d'Avinyó (Abadal) is the amalgamation of a land reclaimed and restored to the wine-growing tradition of Bages (a name bestowed by ancient settlers, paying tribute to the Roman god of wine, Bacchus), the modern approach of its owners and the innovative, willing spirit of a young, enterprising team with a single purpose: to produce wines of quality and great distinction, and with an aspiration: to make wines that have their own defining character. The Bages region is...
