Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

The 2017 Arboset is the first vintage of a blend of Mandó, Picapoll, Sumoll, Punxó Fort, Cap Pelat, Cua de Moltó, Malvasia de Manresa, Pansera, Fumat and Cap Negre (phew!). This is the result of a project to recover local varieties in a vineyard surrounded by forests (what the name means in Catalan language). It has notes of bright red fruit, cherries mainly. It's 13% alcohol and was produced in a light and fresh style with a low pH of 3.29 and a medium body with fine-grained tannins, driven by straightforward berry fruit and a clean and fresh profile. It is quite austere after aging in 60% clay amphorae and 40% in 500-liter oak barrel. Only 936 bottles were filled in July 2021.

Tasted blind. Sour red fruit with a delicate floral touch. On the palate, it is soft and elegant. The tannins are a bit harsh but well covered by juicy fruit flavours and racy acidity. On the back palate, I have some spices such as clove and white pepper. Forest floor, scrubland herbs and a touch of bitterness at the aftertaste that makes me think of Nebbiolo. This is a wine with its own idiosyncrasy. It might not be perfect, but is totally unforced and authentic, even if I am tasting blind.

Bodegas Abadal

Bodegas Abadal

Masies d'Avinyó (Abadal) is the amalgamation of a land reclaimed and restored to the wine-growing tradition of Bages (a name bestowed by ancient settlers, paying tribute to the Roman god of wine, Bacchus), the modern approach of its owners and the innovative, willing spirit of a young, enterprising team with a single purpose: to produce wines of quality and great distinction, and with an aspiration: to make wines that have their own defining character. The Bages region is...
