The wine

We begin our selection from Viñedos Singulares with Afortunado, a Verdejo single varietal wine, produced from century-old vines that have an exceptionally concentrated, fresh character due to the high altitude location of the vineyard parcels chosen: they lie in certain municipalities of Segovia, in Moraleja de Coca, Santiuste, Nava de la Asunción, Codorniz and Aldeanueva del Codonal. According to the producers, this elevated position in Segovia (all the parcels lie in the highest area of the Denomination of Rueda at about 900 metres) is the reason why the varietal is able to attain such a fresh character, in contrast to other Verdejos that bring out overly tropical or oily notes, as can happen in the lower-lying areas of Valladolid in particular.

On first impact, Afortunado reveals a fruity nose highlighting bananas and pineapple; after swirling the glass, aromas come through of newly-cut grass blending nicely with subtly-sweet hints of passion fruit. There is a slightly bitter touch on the palate too, to give good contrast, and a lovely, fresh-fruit feel on the finish. Fortunate indeed are those who get to taste it!

A careful selection of the most important indigenous grape varieties in each region is used to produce...
