The wine

Alonso del Yerro is the emblematic wine of a bodega in which a series of very noble values are unified: love for the family, respect for the environment and a passion for excellence. Javier Alonso and María del Yerro started up their project in the year 2002 with great anticipation and a very clear objective: to produce a singularly different wine in the Ribera del Duero, a wine that would permit a natural expression of the land and of the grape, that might commence modest yet would also be distinguished, a mature and profound wine but not oaky.

To achieve their goal, Javier and María don't stint on resources and rely upon the involvement of talented professionals, with whom they share that same love of vines and passion for wine, and the invaluable advice of Stéphane Derenoncourt, an innovative oenologist, a strong supporter of artisanal work, a follower of biodynamic methods and an adviser as well to important Bordeaux wineries, a "small" detail which will not pass unnoticed on getting to know this wine.

Together they have successfully produced this wine which combines the Tempranillo variety's character with the distinguishing nuances of each vintage. The grapes come from the vineyards on the Santa Marta estate (Roa, Burgos), a series of parcels, 26 hectares in total, characterised by very diverse soils, mainly limestone, ranging from the Ribera's typical red clay to gravelly sand; a diversity which imparts complexity to a wine of great freshness and elegance overall, in which fruit expression predominates over the usual robustness of so many Ribera del Duero reds.

What does this wine taste like?

With intense aromas of ripe red fruit, notes of spices and liquorice on the nose, Alonso del Yerro elegantly expresses on the palate varietal notes (flowers and liquorice), fresh fruit and touches of toasting endowed by its stay in barrel. It's flavoursome, luscious, generous, structured, with plenty of body and shows a good balance between its acidity, alcohol and powerfulness. With lovely silky tannins, it's long and very persistent.

The 2018 Alonso del Yerro comes from the different plots in their 26 hectares of vines that are worked without herbicides or systemic treatments. 2018 was not an easy vintage, but they managed to get their largest crop to date, thanks to a warm end of the season. The grapes were picked between October 4th and 17th, fermented in 10,000-liter stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in mostly used French oak barrels for nine to 15 months, depending on the lot, and in stainless steel and oak vats. This is their bread and butter, the wine that represents the house style; it's ripe without excess and has 14.5% alcohol, mellow acidity and integrated oak that enhances the wine and feels neatly folded into the fruit. It's juicy, fine-boned and balanced, with power and elegance. 80,000 bottles and 1,500 magnums produced. It was bottled in July 2021.
