The wine

A summary from the evaluation by Juan Carlos López de Lacalle of the 2016 vintage

The year 2016 had a mild winter with hardly any rainfall. The rains arrived in spring in abundance, ensuring good budding and a remarkable growth of vegetation. Summer was unusually hot and dry, which led to the plants fighting for the subsoil water reserves; the rain eventually arrived during the second week of September, allowing a good finishing of maturation. The result has been wines with a graceful bearing, clean-cut fruit and exciting honesty. Approachable, packed full of natural energy and transparency, they are wines which reflect the year and express with total clarity the philosophy of Juan Carlos López de Lacalle.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The bottled 2019 Quintanilla combines the power of the year and the place with 14.68% alcohol and soft acidity. There are more tannins, and it has the chalky sensation of the limestone. It also has notions of ripe berries and the character of this year's wines, keeping the freshness. This is austere and mineral within the ripeness. It comes from a 1.13-hectare plot on limestone and sandstone soils planted in 1951 in the village of Elvillar, a walled, old-vine plot located in what was the 15th-century village of San Lorenzo de Quintanilla. The vineyard tends to produce powerful wines, and its grapes were always used to make the Pagos Viejos. This has some rugged tannins that give it a little rusticity, a character of the plot that tends to get stressed in warmer years. 2,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2021.

Artadi

Bodegas Artadi is, in fact, the name by which the Cosecheros Alaveses cooperative is known, a well-orchestrated project that started up in 1985, in which several vine-growing associates became involved to show that cosechero (young red) wine could also prove to be great wine. They were successful, with their cosecheros and all the other wines they have added to their catalogue. During the 1990s, under the direction of Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, the winery saw its prestige...
