The wine

Fruit and complexity fit together to perfection in a wine which we could well designate as the Reserva of the 21st Century. It’s produced primarily from Tempranillo grapes sourced from vineyards which the Barón de Ley winery owns in Mendavia. It’s ageing for 20 months in new American oak barrels, plus a further 24 months of rest in bottle, endow it with its aromatic and gustatory fullness. A veritable treat for the palate and, it must be said, very good value too.

What does this wine taste like?

Displaying a bright cherry red colour with a claret-coloured edge and dense and plentiful legs, Barón de Ley Reserva delights the nose with a fruity intensity of raspberries and blackberries blending in perfectly with fascinating aromas gained from its elegant and wise ageing process. Hints of coconut and caramel combine with the freshness of mountain herbs to offer a splendidly balanced and direct nose. An impressive entry into the mouth leads to a full and unctuous mouthfeel with rounded tannins and a good degree of acidity. Spices such as pepper, nutmeg and vanilla sit alongside ripe fruit and stand out as retronasal aromas, while fine smoky hints and a delicate touch of cocoa appear in the background. Its elegant and complex bouquet leads to a long and intense finish embellished with red fruits which bring to mind Mediterranean woodlands.

Barón de Ley

The Barón de Ley winery is located in an old monastery in the town of Mendavia, in the Navarre area of the DOCa Rioja appellation. Founded in 1985 and inspired by the Médoc châteaux in France, its Reserva and Gran Reserva wines were quickly rated among the best wines for long-term ageing. One of the few Spanish wineries listed on the stock exchange, it is now a business group bringing together names such as El...
