The wine

The Beaucastel Vieilles Vignes white is an iconic wine, regarded by all the international critics as one of the great French whites, and by extension, one of the world's too; 'the Montrachet of southern France', according to Robert Parker.

The grapes from vines aged over 70 years old, which grow in a small parcel on what was once a sea bed, benefit from the effect of the pebbles so that they ripen even beyond their optimal maturation point. After the fruit has been harvested by hand and placed into small crates, it undergoes fermentation in two different types of container (30% oak and 70% stainless steel). The wine is then blended and continues on to malolactic fermentation. After that, it acquires character for the next eight months, being kept in the cellar until the time comes for its bottling.

When you observe its seductive gold colour and experience the intensity of its exotic aromas, you'll understand why some critics have described it as extravagant. The Vieilles Vignes is a white of exceptional richness and depth. The touches of peaches, oak and white flowers lead on to a voluminous, oily palate refreshed by hints of orange peel and ginger. A strong mineral sensation, derived from the limestone, and a juicy and herbaceous centre are electrified by a vertical acidity that augurs an immense future. Its finish is long and robust, pure and precise, dominated by notes of Provençal herbs and salted butter.

NOTE: It's very important to decant it a couple of hours before drinking and not to serve it too cold.

The winery

Château de Beaucastel

In the year 1321, in the time of Pope John XXII, four casks from the papal cellar arrived in Châteauneuf to be filled with wine; that was how the story started of "du-Pape" wine. The history of the Château de Beaucastel, located in the most northerly part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, dates back to 1549, when Pierre de Beaucastel bought a barn and some land in Coudoulet. The winery has belonged to the Perrin family since 1909, and today the project is under the direction...
