The wine

A subtle, silky, mature wine with an irresistible nose and richly satisfying on the palate, which combines to perfection the Finca Allende powerfulness and elegance.

It appears a dark Morello cherry colour, very intense and almost opaque. The nose exudes an aroma of great intensity, and in the foreground black fruit verging on the over-ripe, which prevails over the oak, with balsamic wafts and hints of black chocolate also appreciated. It has good structure on the palate, the right amount of acidity, a fine fruit expression and remarkable powerfulness, all combined with great elegance.

Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The single-vineyard 2011 Calvario contains the mix of grapes found in the field, mostly Tempranillo with some 8% Garnacha and 2% Graciano. The head-pruned vines were planted in 1945 on clay soils with abundant gravels and stones rich in iron. The uncrushed grapes fermented in a French oak vat with indigenous yeasts and the wine matured in new French oak barriques for 18 months, during which time it was racked every six months. There are lots of smoky, dark, black aromas that are faintly animal (Miguel Angel de Gregorio think it's the character of the Darnajou barrels) that have an added touch of licorice, fountain pen ink and tempera paint. The palate is medium-bodied, with less acidity than other vintages, and is approachable with abundant but fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins that end dry. I think it needs a couple of years in bottle to polish and integrate the tannins. It was put into 8,000 bottles in June 2013.

Finca Allende

Miguel Ángel de Gregorio is one of the best winemakers in the country and an assiduous vine grower. Quite a reference point in La Rioja, he was one of the first to opt for single vineyard wines (Calvario and Aurus have been his principal exponents) and he is a firm supporter of indigenous varieties and hard work in the vineyard. He received praise first of all for his great efforts at Bodegas Bretón, but he attracted fame definitively due to the wines of his own winery: Finca...
