The wine

The name of this splendid Cuvée says it all, Terre de Lumière, Land of Light. From Moulin-à-Vent, one of the ten Beaujolais crus, whose name comes from the old windmill which used to stand on a hill in Romanèche-Thorins. The noble character of the wines from this ‘land of light’ is down to the manganese-rich granite soils which give the wines an elegant ageing potential.

What does this wine taste like?

Château du Chatelard is pure balance in a bottle. It is nigh on impossible to tell where the fruity aromas end and the wooden tones begin. Cherries, ripe redcurrants, violets, withering roses and finely toasted staves come together to delight the nose. The wine moves smoothly across the palate, awakening sensations with its acidity and massaging the mouth with a creamy mouthfeel. Discrete flavours of spices and dry orange peel appear with every sip, as well as a herbal hint of damp undergrowth and a comforting reminiscence of smoky charcoal. Minutes after the last sip, its ethereal character can still be felt on the tongue while your gums are crying out for one more chance to enjoy its fine tannicity.

Drinking and storing

Best served between 14º and 16ºC in a Pinot Noir style glass. An ideal moment to enjoy is four years after its harvest date, although it can easily stand for a further 4 or 5 years.

Fatty Iberian pork, roast Bresse chicken, the French beef tripe speciality tablier de sapeur, skate wings in Grenoble sauce, eel stew, or even game dishes.

Winemaking

Gamay grapes harvested by hand. Following a careful selection, they are left in tanks to macerate for 12 days to extract delicate tannins and fine textures. A slow, gentle pressing preserves the natural elegance of the fruit. The wine stands for eight months in barrels and different sized foudres, in a 40/60% split.
