The wine

The impressive Château Lanessan, near the small town of Saint-Julien, has a long history dating back to the fourteenth century. In 1793 it was taken over by the Delbos family and is now currently run by their descendents, the Bouteiller family. The estate stretches out over 260 hectares, 40 of which are devoted to vines with a classic mixture of Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The grapes are vinified using traditional methods in wooden barrels – including a high proportion of new barrels. The resulting wine is a splendidly firm, well-produced wine offering excellent value for money – a result guaranteed with the great oenologist Paz Espejo in charge.

Rich, elegant, harmonious ... Château Lanessan. Its traditional Bordeaux style, excellent price, and potential for laying down for decades make it a splendid example of Haut-Médoc wines

What does this wine taste like?

The Château Lanessan wine delights the nose with an intense and soothing aroma of damp earth and flowers. Its varietal typicity offers hints of pepper and tobacco leaves, rounded off with roasted notes thanks to its time spent ageing in wood. A medium-bodied wine with measured tannins, a good level of acidity and a rounded mouth. Retronasal tasting adds aromas of pencil lead and dark fruit which linger until its smooth and balanced finish.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Jancis Robinson, and Suckling

The 2018 Lanessan is deep garnet-purple colored with black cherries, cassis, mulberries and baked plums on the nose with herbs, earth and tea hints. Medium to full-bodied, it is a little chewy and herbal with the oak poking through on the finish.

Tasted blind. Deep blackish crimson. Pale rim. Correct, stony nose reminds me of St-Estèphe. Round palate entry and the fruit pretty much covers the ripe tannins.

Black-plum, dried-herb, tobacco and some meaty aromas. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, fine tannins. Savory and salty finish. Tight and layered. Drink from 2023.
