The wine

The Château Marjosse is a historic property located 14 kilometers south of Saint-Émilion and built in 1782. It is surrounded by a magnificent property of 16 hectares of vineyards rooted to excellent clay and limestone soils. The renowned winemaker Pierre Lurton, born in a neighboring property, bought the property progressively from 1991 and since then has not stopped producing wines of increasing quality. Some of the vines are relatively young, but others date back to 1920.

The Château Marjosse red is a wine based on merlot grapes, accompanied by cabernet franc and, to a lesser extent, with cabernet sauvignon and malbec, the variety with the longest-lived strains. The average age of the strains is about twenty five years and the soils, as in most of the property, are clay-calcareous. The planting density is 5,000 plants per hectare and the aging of the wine lasts for a year in French oak barrels, of which only 50% is new; the rest of the wine was aged in large old barrels.

What does this wine taste like?

It is a purple wine with a nose that initially remembers the tar, the forest floor and the aromas of wrought earth. Just a few minutes later, the elegant aromas of very ripe cherries, blueberries and blackberries appear with a touch of licorice, bay leaves and spices for baking. In the mouth it is fatty and velvety, of great freshness and with mature and flexible tannins drawing a firm spine. Its end of fruit compote and beautiful accents of red fruit reminiscent of raspberry cake, but also rosehip tea and wild sage.

The 2018 Marjosse is made up of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc with a splash of old Malbec. Big old barrels were used for 25% of the crop. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it opens with a compelling nose of baking spices, raspberry pie, warm red and black currants, rose hip tea and fragrant earth with a waft of wild sage. Medium-bodied, the palate is filled with fragrant red and black fruit, framed by great freshness and soft, supple tannins, finishing on a floral note.

Deep crimson, with the fragrance of small red and black berries, a zestiness that is unexpected in 2018, peppery spice too. While there is richness and weight, not least from the 14.5% alcohol, there is unexpected freshness here too, the oak well balanced with the fruit. The tannins are already surprisingly supple and there's a rather nice peppery aftertaste to distract from the felt presence of the alcohol at the back of the throat. Juicy and approachable for such a young wine.
