The wine

The name of the most treasured wine in South Africa, Chocolate Block, is probably inspired by its spice notes, especially those of chocolate and toast from its time in wood, which blend perfectly with a delectable ripe fruit to create a wonderful wine.

Chocolate Block is produced by Boekenhoutskloof, one of the wineries responsible for the spectacular development in winemaking seen in South Africa and a key name on the world stage. They use organic production methods and their wines reflect the Mediterranean character of the Cape Peninsula. This Mediterranean profile is clearly seen through the coupage of Chocolate Block: its backbone is the Syrah variety (70%), although Grenache grapes (15%) bring distinctive fruity aromas and vitality. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsaut, and Viognier give it the final touch.

What does this wine taste like?

The wine's deep ruby-red colour gives a clue to the intensity of its aromas of ripe fruit like plums, blackberries and raspberries which combine perfectly with the spiced notes of chocolate and toast gained from its time spent ageing in wood. It has a smooth enveloping texture in the mouth leading up to a round and lingering finish. Undoubtedly, Chocolate Block is a temptation you won't be able to resist.
