The wine

The Domaine Lafage, located just south of Perpignan, offers one of the most complete catalogues of France, characterised by their excellent pleasure/price ratio. One of their most remarcable wines at the moment is the Bastide Miraflors, a wine made up of Syrah and Grenache from old vines, a very special one, as it combines the ripeness and seduction one would normally associate to the red wines from the New World, with the elegance and strong personality of South Eastern France. Using Robert Parker Wine Advocate words, "This wine is almost too good to be true".

Lafage produces more expensive wines, but this one undoubtedly stands out in the winery's wide-ranging catalogue for its wonderful characteristics. Hints of liquorice, an intense Mediterranean character and succulent flavours make it an irresistible choice for all wine-lovers. Sipping it brings to mind the pebble-covered vineyards while its lushness and fragrances remind us of the six weeks the fruit macerated with its skins. Violets, pepper, and the fallen leaves around the high-altitude Syrah vines blend wonderfully alongside a treat of raspberry jam and smoky tones from the Grenache of Maury. If a perfect balance is possible in a red wine, we are convinced that it would closely resemble the sensations this extraordinary Bastide Miraflors delights us with: complex, attractive, bright, juicy and many more excellent qualities that cannot be expressed in mere words. A wine you must try.

What does this wine taste like?

This is a deep purple red created from Grenache aged in concrete tanks and Syrah matured in demi-muids. Its nose is unusually complex for its price: smoky notes, chocolate, Provençal herbs and wild fruits enhance a silky, mineral and extremely round palate. Definitely, a very well made wine that results in a sensational value.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

The 2019 Côtes du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors is a blend of 70% Syrah (vinified as whole bunches and aged in 20% new demi-muids) and 30% Grenache (destemmed and aged in concrete). Hints of peppery spice, vanilla and woodsmoke accent the blueberry-scented nose, while the full-bodied palate is ripe, supple and concentrated, adding hints of black cherries, chocolate and licorice on the long finish. It's hard to top this sort of quality at the suggested retail of $19.

Plum conserve. Rich and ripe. Structure and sweetness, bursting with delicious fruit. A wine of the sun and wind with all the intensity and concentration and balance that you’d want from Côtes Catalanes. Big hug of tannins. VGV - Very good value.

Domaine Lafage

Domaine Lafage, situated on the outskirts of Perpignan, is the winery run by Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage, the sixth generation in charge of the family-owned vineyards. The winery's modern-day history began with 36 ha of inherited old vines and gradually extended over very varied corners of Roussillon, where different climates and terrains occur, enabling the winery to produce one of the most complete wine portfolios in the whole of France. Lying between the sea and the...
