The wine

A Cerasuolo di Vittoria red wine with a floral soul created using Nero d'Avola, the star grape of Sicily, and Frappato, one of the oldest local grapes. In production since 2016, it constantly receives praise and excellent ratings from international wine critics.

It is produced in the DOC Vittoria in the south-west of Sicily. The grape must is fermented with skins at a controlled temperature in stainless steel tanks. It is then left to stand for 8 months in tanks and at least a further 7 months in the bottle. Its character means it will improve for 3 or 4 years, but it is also pleasant enough to make it perfect for drinking immediately. With a colour somewhere between ruby-red and cherry, it displays a restrained nose with earthy and balsamic reminiscences which refresh the aromas of black forest fruit. Hints of smoke, spices (black pepper) and the odd blue flower open the way for a well-balanced mouth with plentiful yet well-integrated tannins. Its feel brings to mind powdered cocoa and black plum skins. It is fresh and smooth on the palate, a juicy and pleasing wine with all the balanced harmony a good Cerasuolo di Vittoria can bring; Nero d'Avola delivers structure and character, whereas Frappato provides the fruity notes.

Thanks to its excellent balance, it is extremely versatile at mealtimes. It pairs just as well with strong starters as with roasted or grilled meat, or even oven-baked oily fish. Try the wonderful combination of Donnafugata Cerasuolo di Vittoria Floramundi with a pork sandwich and a light spreading of dark fruit jam.

The Donnafugata wines are ambassadors of Sicily and its exciting, wide-ranging realm of sensations: conveying the diversity of soils present on the island, the various orientations and altitudes of the vineyard locations, the climate’s special...
