The wine
El Pedal is one of the latest winemaking projects by Hermanos Hernáiz and excellent value for money. A blend of grapes from different plots creates a more seductive and Mediterranean-style Rioja despite using Tempranillo from Rioja Alta. It is a fresh wine, carefree and direct, best enjoyed when chilled a little more than usual.

Winemaking
The wine is made in concrete and stainless steel tanks with gentle stirring at low temperatures. The malolactic fermentation is carried out in concrete tanks, 5,000-litre wooden vats and pre-used 500-litre barrels.
Before being bottled come springtime, a small amount of the previous vintage which has aged for a year in oak is added, making up about 10% of the finished wine.

The winery
Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz
Finca La Emperatriz is one of the very few Rioja wineries to produce their wines from one single vine-growing plantation, which is customary in Bordeaux's Médoc region (other Rioja wineries employing the same model are Remelluri, Valpiedra and Contino). This is an estate of excellent quality whose potential had already been recognised at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878 and which concealed a very important history. The estate originally belonged to Eugenia de Montijo,...
