The wine

Lezér might not be a top-notch wine but its price-quality-pleasure ratio is outstanding, and so is its distinct stamp of origin: Teroldego grapes, a mountain variety, the handiwork of a producer who defines herself as an agriculturalist, artisan and artist.

Its name means ‘light’ in the Trentino dialect and sure enough this is a light wine: light in body and colour, light in bottle weight (better in support of sustainability) and created for enjoying with others on more festive or summertime occasions. Light, but not simple. It’s bright, smells and tastes of forest fruit, its palate is refreshing and ends on a slightly bitter note which makes it decidedly moreish. Yet so light, it’ll have flown out of our warehouse within a couple of months!

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Suckling

Here's a fun new wine from Foradori that offers unbelievable value. The 2019 Rosso Lezèr is a charming and delicate expression of Trentino's Teroldego. It opens to a bright ruby color with plenty of inner gloss and shine. The fruit is lifted by cassis, wild strawberry, blue flower and a pretty touch of bitter almond. It hits the palate with beautiful silkiness. The idea for Lezèr came in 2017 when hail storms destroyed much of the fruit, and some intact clusters were fermented apart to make this wine. The idea was repeated in future vintages. Lezèr sees a very brief skin maceration of about 24 hours and some full cluster is used depending on the year. This is a sensational wine, with a fruit-forward and easy disposition presented with understated elegance.

Why not now? This light and lively red is brimming with cranberry and cherry aromas. Very juicy and succulent, but bone dry and crisp on the palate, this demands to be drunk cold, for any spur of the moment celebration. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

Winemaking

Lézer is an experimental wine for Foradori, Lezér. It came about by accident in 2017 when a frost destroyed 40% of the harvest and Foradori took the opportunity to experiment with different containers and winemaking processes for bunches which could be made use of. The end result was a joyful, lively wine, with a noticeable character of the vintage year and the land. It was so convincing that they carried on making it, and still do today, based on that experimental idea, where the characteristics of each harvest decide the most suitable type of process and container, and also the proportion of stalks to include, with macerations always lasting less than 24 hours: earthenware amphorae, oak and concrete containers.

Vineyards

Elisabetta Foradori’s vineyards come under the Demeter biodynamic certification guarantee, but the wine-making focus of this producer goes further and can be better explained by referring to the Triple A movement: defined as being agriculturist, artisan and artist, a definite commitment to indigenous varieties and working the vineyards naturally, without impairing the raw material nor the final product in the winery, and having the creative ability to convey the essence of the land in the wine.
