The wine

Gaba do Xil Godello is an excellent choice of wine at a price which gives a surprising value for money. It presents a modern look at wines from the often forgotten winemaking regions of inland Galicia. A strong Atlantic character with continental influences, it is an expressive and serious wine with a surprising maturity and freshness. Godello grapes play a big part in its character but so too does the unique character of the area and its vineyards of slate and red clay soils at heights of 500 metres.

What does this wine taste like?

Gabo do Xil Godello is a soothing, herbal and aromatic wine in the glass with intense aromas of bay leaves and small wild flowers. As it warms slightly, hints of stone fruit like peaches appear with a fascinating blend of sweetness and freshness, bringing to mind honey and lemons. It offers a rounded, smooth and dry taste in the mouth with a pleasant sensation of maturity wrapping around the palate. The elegance of granite is present in every sip while an excellent acidity and fine texture ensure a lingering sensation.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

2020 was a warm year with an early harvest and isolated frost the night of March 27th that resulted in a ripe 2020 Gaba do Xil Branco. Mostly Godello from red clay and slate soils, it fermented with indigenous yeasts and was kept with the lees for some four months. It was harvested 20 days earlier than the 2018 to avoid overripeness of the grapes, because Godello can get too heavy when too ripe. They managed to keep the freshness and the varietal character here, with subtle aromas of herbs and white fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, with a velvety mouthfeel. 118,560 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2021.

Tasted blind. An easy-drinking style of Godello. Fruity, agreeable, more immediate than persistent, but voluminous too. Refreshing. Not the most complex, but very pleasurable. Nicely made and well-managed, but not particularly deep.

Vineyards

The Godello grapes used for Gaba do Xil Godello are grown around the villages of Larouco and Santa Cruz in the small Valdeorras appellation in vineyards owned by the winery or by local winegrowers who also use traditional methods. Most of the vines are trellis-trained and grapes are carefully selected and harvested by hand using small crates to take them to the winery where native yeasts are used for the fermentation.
