The wine

Solely produced in the great years, the Gran Reserva de Remelluri or La Granja Remelluri, is the bodega’s most precious wine. Only the best parcels are selected for the making of this wine, a reflection of various personalities due to the great variety of micro-climates, magically combined in a wine that is unique with every vintage.

La Granja Remelluri is made following the Rioja Gran Reserva tradition, a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano with small quantities of white grapes (Muscat, Viura and Malvasía), and exhibits a delightful bouquet, with notes of menthol, fennel and lavender; it is a medium-bodied wine, with smooth tannins, an elegant structure and a long finish.

Since Telmo Rodríguez’s renewed involvement in the family winery, Remelluri has revived the biodynamic practices of centuries past, both in the farming methods used and in production, seeking the ‘Remelluri identity', the pure expression of the terroir.

Aged in French and American oak barrels for 25 months.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Suckling, and Jancis Robinson

Very consistent with the style of the very dry, warm and ripe year, the 2011 Granja Remelluri Gran Reserva had a powerful personality, with darker fruit and some earthy sensations, very Mediterranean, with plenty of rosemary aromas. It has the rugged tannin nicely polished and fine-grained, more elegant than what was produced in the 1990s. They now use the fruit from the older Garnacha vines in Remelluri, selecting the plots that have the soils with the most potential. They are still in search of their best plots, not necessarily those with older vines but the ones with the most potential of the soil. This was bottled in May 2014. 20,000 bottles produced.

The white truffle and dark berry character comes through here. Rosemary too. Full body, chewy and extremely long. It shows fantastic length and structure. Noble tannins. Needs at least five to six years to soften.

Dark cherry colour. As well as the fresher fruit of the 2010, here there is more sign of the origin – more rocky and mineral with a slight dusty note over the fruit. Less sweet-fruited on the nose. Incredibly fine tannins, beautifully dry and succulent. Needs more time to show its complexity but it’s all in harmony for a long future.

Granja Ntra. Sra de Remelluri

Granja Ntra. Sra de Remelluri

The Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri is to be found where once stood the Monastery of Toloño (Labastida), on the old estate that formerly belonged to the monks of St. Jerome who, in the 14th Century, worked the lands growing cereals and vines. There are still traces to be found of their community (a wine press and a cemetery). In 1968 Jaime Rodríguez Salís restored the vineyards and the ancient buildings, converting the monastery into the winery it is today, where the Remelluri...
