Still tough but very good
Bandol is one of the most exciting but also toughest wines in the world. In this area, Mourvedre produces wines that take a long time to fully mature but last for a very long time. On the first day, even after decanting, La Badiane 2006 was still very closed, with tannins to the fore, even after 12 years. The enticing fruit was lurking behind the armour of tannins, which seemed a bit bitter. It was more interesting than truly enjoyable. The following evening, though, was a completely different proposition: the tannins had softened, the fruit had opened up and it had become more complex with hints of garrique, licorice and animal flavours. Delicious, if still tough. I wish I had drank it over three days, but ideally it should be left in the cellar for a few more years to enjoy it to the fullest.
