The wine

The best description for this wine would arise from seeing the expression on the face of someone who has just tried it and found out how much a bottle costs: less than a fiver. Disbelief at first, followed by astonishment, and finally admiration.

If the first impression it gives proves positive, with the wine adjudged good, very fruit-forward and expressive, a mature wine with pleasant nuances from oak-ageing, creamy, spicy, sweet notes… on learning the price, the conclusion is eminently clear: excellent value for money, a fine blend of Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell, two varieties indigenous to the Almansa region.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The fruit-driven and easy-to-drink 2019 Laya was produced with Garnacha Tintorera, or Alicante Bouschet, grapes blended with 30% Monastrell from an unusually wet year with torrential rains during the harvest. It fermented in stainless steel vats with neutral yeasts, with malolactic in barrel, where the wine matured for four months. It's very dark, almost opaque, expressive and open. This comes from younger vines yet is structured and seamless, quite complete. It feels like a very good vintage for Garnacha Tintorera in the zone. The palate is round, somehow creamy, and the tannins are ripe and juicy. 360,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2020.

Bodegas Atalaya

Bodegas Atalaya

The Bodegas Atalaya Project has arisen out of the combined efforts of the Gil Family Estates and the López family from El Pilar de la Horadada. In a little-known region, situated between the Murcian denominations, Manchuela and Valencia, a serious commitment was shown right from the start to working with old vines of indigenous varieties (Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell), with the aim of elevating the Almansa DO through its historic grapes. Thus, back in 2007, the first...
