The wine

All the grapes used to make Marqués de Riscal Gran Reserva come from vineyards over 80 years old. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the different lots are tasted separately and the final blend is aged for two and a half years in French oak, plus a further three years in the bottle before being released onto the market.

Bigarreau cherry colour with violet hues and brick-red rims. The nose is complex and balsamic, with the aromas of long ageing subtly overpowering the fruity aromas; hints of undergrowth, truffles and toasted wood. The palate is harmonious, captivating and elegantly tannic. A lingering, aristocratic and spicy finish.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Suckling and Jancis Robinson

A rich and rather decadent Rioja with ripe berry, tobacco and bark aromas that follow through to a full body with layered, creamy tannins and a long, fresh finish with lemon peel and apple to the dark fruit. Touches of coconut and toffee. Drink or hold.

Inky purple. A meaty and savoury nose with balsamic and Marmite notes. Sweet, dark fruit is backed up by vibrant acidity and surprisingly soft tannins, the oak is well-integrated. Lovely density and weight with the same chalky, mineral finish. It’s a rich wine but also carries itself with elegance and has a nice lightness of touch. Should age beautifully as it has all the components in check.

Marqués de Riscal, Herederos

Marqués de Riscal's history began in 1858 when its founder, Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, started to apply in Elciego wine-making techniques employed in Bordeaux. Jean Pineau, the master winemaker at Château Lanessan in the Haut Medoc, gave his professional advice to the then sixth Marquis of Riscal regarding the production of wines following the French system, therefore abandoning the rough and rather unrefined style of Rioja wine and thus establishing La Rioja's first modern...
