The wine

Mas Collet is a medium-bodied red wine with a light ageing process in barrels. It is made with a blend of three grapes: Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache. Proportions of the three varieties in the final combination may vary slightly from year to year, but are roughly in equal parts of a third each.

What does this wine taste like?

It displays an intense Picota cherry colour with violet glints. Complex aromas of wild fruit (blackberries and bilberries) mix with smooth toasted aromas from the wooden barrels perfectly integrated with hints of the freshness of damp earth and thyme. A good level of acidity makes it both a long and wide wine in the mouth. The richness of its blend means it pairs well with a wide range of very different dishes.

Winemaking

Usually harvested between early September and mid-October with a yield of 1.2kg – 1.5 kg per vine. The must of destemmed and crushed grapes ferments at a controlled temperature between 26 to 29ºC and macerates for a period ranging between 8 and 16 days as each variety is vinified separately and according to conditions. The malolactic fermentation process then begins in the tanks before coming to an end in the barrels. After this, the wine is left to age for nine months in 228-litre lightly and medium-toasted French and American oak barrels which can be between one and five years old. The wine then stands for a further 6 months for refining.

The Capçanes Cooperative was founded in 1933 and currently numbers 125 members who contribute between them some 250 hectares of vineyards. Although located in the Priorat region, their vineyards originally belonged to the Tarragona DO, until 2001 when the Montsant denomination for this area of Falset and its vicinity was approved. The Cooperative's updating and upward evolution have resulted over recent years in a very significant qualitative change in their wines, making it...
