The wine

Monasterio de las Viñas Gran Reserva is a multi-award-winning red wine from DO Cariñena made using a blend of Grenache (60%), Tempranillo (30%) and Carignan (10%) grown in a stony vineyard over 40 years old in the small town of Aguarón, within the province of Zaragoza.

A lengthy stay in American and French oak barrels adds complexity and polishes its youthful sharp edges, and the result is a stylish maroon coloured wine with elegant aromas of red currants, tobacco, and undergrowth. Swilling the wine around in the glass soon brings out hints of cedar, eucalyptus, sloes, dry leaves, and dusty walks. All in all it is an intense and complex wine, but also a well-balanced one. Pleasant in the mouth with a medium body, its feelings of plum skins and comforting sweet tannins come to the front. A good level of acidity brings out the character of the fruit which, despite its long ageing period, still remain as aromas of cherries and red currants. Balsamic hints emphasize a surprisingly fresh feeling for a wine like this. Aromas of leather and liquorice combine with toasted notes and delicate spices to create a classy seductive wine. Light hints of liquorice and fine balsamic notes of bay leaf and eucalyptus eventually appear, with a taste of cocoa powder rounding off a wine with no sharpness. A wonderfully balanced wine, its long-lasting delicious aftertaste makes it hard to drink just one glass.
