The wine

A 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) wine from the Frutos Villar family’s estate at Bodega Muruve in Toro. In the wine-making process, the de-stemmed grapes undergo traditional maceration in stainless steel tanks with pumping over 3 or 4 times a day. After drawing off, the wine is allowed to settle before the barrels are filled and then the ageing period lasts for up to 20 months, with racking every 3 or 6 months.

The wine appears a cherry-red colour with good intensity, and the aroma on the nose highlights the notes acquired from oak ageing. There is much evidence of complexity and elegance on the palate which is well-balanced and rounded, with plenty of persistence via the retronasal passage.

Aged for at least 18 months in 90% American and 10% French oak barrels. The wine underwent a minimum of 12 months of bottle ageing before being released.

Bodega Calderona, their second winery, was set up in Cigales in 1960 and has 105 hectares of vineyards, producing wines which...
