The wine

This wine constitutes the classic Australian red par excellence, in which the elegance of the Cabernet Sauvignon and the richness of the Shiraz combine to complement each other perfectly. It was first made in the 1960s by the renowned winemaker, Max Schubert, and has earned the nickname of 'baby Grange', due to time spent in oak barrels used for the previous Grange vintage. Bin 389 has gained a reputation for longevity too, and for the skilful balance achieved between fruit and oak. Thanks to the inherent qualities of this wine, Penfolds has achieved even more acclaim and seen an increased demand for its red wines at home and abroad.

A dark purple colour, the fragrant nose reveals aromas of black olives, mixed berries, lavender and liquorice. Well-balanced and persistent on the palate, with a rich black fruit presence.

Aged for 12 months in American oak barrels.

Englishman Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary bought the Magill Estate in 1844, soon after arriving in Australia. The 500 acres of Grenache were used to start making fortified wines which would be prescribed as a remedy for combating anaemia. In 1870, the couple...
