The wine

Pintia is to Toro, what Vega Sicilia is to the Ribera del Duero. Both wineries concentrate all their efforts on what is undeniably their obsession: perfection. Pintia was one of the first reds to prove the subtlety and elegance which the Tinta de Toro variety is capable of when it's well understood and handled with great care and respect. Pintia marks a before and after in wines of the Toro denomination and has raised quality standards to levels hitherto unimagined. Powerful reds abound in Toro, as well as some very elegant ones, but there are exceedingly few that combine powerfulness and elegance in such a dignified way as Pintia manages to do.

The grapes, hand-picked and selected in the vineyard, undergo a double selection process in the winery and are refrigerated to preserve their fruit intensity; they ferment in stainless steel and oak, and then rest for about a year in predominantly French oak. The ensuing wine is profound and intense, with a mesmerizing Picota cherry colour and a clean and distinctive nose dominated by the aromas of ripe fruit (blackberries and blueberries), refined oak, spices and balsamic hints. On the palate it's full and long, perfumed and rustic, tannic and most pleasant too. It shuns strong alcohol aromas and any over-ripeness, thanks to pinpoint acidity. Its finish, replete with vanilla and blue flowers, culminates in an ever-lasting aftertaste that's resoundingly warm.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker, Parker, and Parker

The 2018 Pintia comes from a cooler and wetter vintage when the grapes were picked between September 20th and October 7th, and it fermented in their new fermentation room where they feel they can be more precise. The wine still has 15% alcohol, with a pH of 3.82 and 4.6 grams of acidity. It had a shorter élevage this year and matured for 10 months in French and 18% American oak barrels, 81% of them new. The nose is very expressive, with bright cherry fruit, and the wine is fresher than the norm in the region, with integrated alcohol and oak, reflecting a very cool year, floral and perfumed. The palate is medium-bodied and reveals very fine and elegant tannins. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Pintia. 251,512 bottles, 14,144 half-bottles, 6,543 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in April 2020.

The wine released in 2024 is the 2019 Pintia, from a very dry year when they did a softer vinification and used some 15% stainless steel for the élevage to keep the fruit and freshness. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats. It's a powerful year; the wine has 15% alcohol and is round and full-bodied. It's a heady and ripe Pintia. They had to be careful with the harvest date, and they harvested early and quite quickly. Even though the wine is ripe and heady, with notes of grenadine and small ripe berries, it's also exotic and spicy, quite showy, lush and full-bodied, with the 2019 tannins. It's a more powerful wine that is going to require patience. They produced 224,724 bottles, 6,587 magnums and some smaller and larger sizes. It was bottled in May 2021.

The 2020 Pintia is from a powerful year of concentration, so they were very careful with the harvest date, did a softer vinification trying to extract less and included amphorae and less toast in the élevage. It's opulent and juicy but gentle. The wine reached 15.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.9 with 4.4 grams of acidity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It was a very warm and dry vintage in Toro, with a heat wave before the harvest, so they had to rush to pick the grapes; and still the wine is richer and more powerful, even though the amphorae helped them contain the sensation of ripeness in the wine. It has a heady and ripe profile, very aromatic and showy, with notes of very ripe berries, prunes and decayed violets with a faint volatile twist. It matured 70% in new barrels, 10% in used barrels, 10% in stainless steel and 5% in clay pots. It's full bodied and lush, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It was a ripe and powerful vintage for Pintia, but it evolved nicely in the glass, showing less of its ripe side with time, which to me is a good sign. Some 14,304 half bottles, 209,009 bottles, 6,645 magnums and some larger formats were produced. It was bottled in August 2022.

Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia

Around the time of releasing the Alión winery's first vintage in 1995, Vega Sicilia was contemplating a new project that lay further afield, but close to the line of the River Duero. Toro in Zamora province presented itself as an interesting prospect, since it had a centuries-long tradition of wine-making that included some glorious spells, although then it went generally unnoticed. Recognising the region's potential, the venture began in 1997 after the purchase of 70...
