The wine

Pittacum Aurea reflects the Mencía's fragrance, sweetness and minerality, and captures the wisdom of a century-old vineyard, the Finca Areixola, located at Fuente de Miel. Of course, with a name like 'honey spring' we couldn't expect anything else! It's also a wine for cellaring, and profound, which can be enjoyed right from when young. Elegant, Atlantic, fresh and with very ripe red fruit, Morello cherries and redcurrants. Its sweetness (sweet spices) is seductive on the nose and it performs most pleasantly on the palate. Juicy, meaty and with a refreshing minerality.

Aurea receives the finest care and attention the winery can provide: in the vineyard, where cultivation requires tasks to be carried out solely by hand due to the height and inclination of the slope lying at 700 metres, as well as the traditional high density planting; in the cellar, where the wine silently matures in new French oak barrels; in its elegant Burgundy bottle, with a stark and compelling design.

Bodegas Pittacum now boasts considerable experience and its expertise is very noticeable. It started out in 1999 with the aim of creating wines with personality, totally committed to its environment, the Mencía variety and the Bierzo countryside, and today possesses 5 hectares of its own vineyards, with vines ranging in age between 50 and 80 years old, located among the municipal districts of Arganza, Valtuille, Villafranca and Ponferrada. Since 2002, it has belonged to the Bodegas Gauda group, which also includes Bodega Quinta Sardonia.

Pittacum Aurea: a forthright and profound wine with an acidity that promises longevity.

Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker

The 2018 Pittacum Aurea keeps a profile from the 2000s, with generous ripeness and oak, 14.5% alcohol and creamy, toasty and smoky aromas and flavors from the élevage in barrel for 14 months, which also provide it with some slightly astringent tannins in the finish. But it's more civilized and has less oak than in the most extreme moments of the style, more balanced and approachable. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.

Viñedos y Bodegas Pittacum

The Pittacum project started out in 1999 in Arganza, in Bierzo, a Denomination of Origin undergoing rediscovery in the province of León. A deep passion for wine led three associates from Ponferrada to join forces and concentrate on the indigenous black grape variety, Mencía, with the clear intention of showing that their local wines had plenty of personality. A few years later, in 2002, Terras Gauda acquired 65% of the winery. Bodegas Pittacum own 5 hectares of vineyards...
