The wine

Campo delle Oche comes from a Verdicchio vineyard planted in 1955 on the Montecarotto's clay and sandy soils. Viticulture runs in the family for Natalino Crognaletti, who runs Fattoria San Lorenzo like his father and grandfather had done before him. It's from them that he gets his love of the Verdicchio and the art of turning it into wine to draw out of this variety all of its expression and characteristics. With the professional advice of the oenologist Hartmann Donà (a well-known producer of wines in Alto Adige), Natalino makes pure, authentic Verdicchios. Intervention in the vineyard is reduced to the minimum and only involves treatments using copper, sulphur or organic preparations when strictly necessary.

Campo delle Oche appears a bright gold colour and has an excellent, almost oily, consistency which makes one think of barrel ageing even though it hasn't had it. The Campo delle Oche production process takes place solely in steel containers and concrete tanks where it undergoes maturing on its lees for more than three years. On the nose it's mightily impressive and immediately reveals its considerable alcohol content, softened and mitigated by its powerful flavour and freshness, and very well integrated into the wine's structure. Direct, dry, extremely mineral, saline and with notes of dried fruits and nuts and honey. A robust, restrained wine that's the perfect companion to substantial meals.

Fattoria San Lorenzo

The running of the winery has been handed down from father to son for several generations. Enrico Crognaletti, grandfather of the current owner, Natalino, in addition to making good Verdicchio wine was also a good cooper: he selected the oaks and built the barrels that he needed to make his wine. Gino, Natalino’s father, was a talented winemaker, who spent almost all his life in selecting old Verdicchio clones (in the old vineyards called "tree-lined"). His choice of bunches...
