The wine

This has long been David Powell's favourite within the Torbreck portfolio, an impressive wine due to the remarkable old bush vines, some more than a century old, that survived devastation in the 1980s and remained unaffected by phylloxera. The Steading is linked to the Scottish highlands, as the term used to describe a group of barns, stables and outbuildings.

The combining of these traditional Barossa grape varieties (60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mataro, the Australian Mourvèdre) creates a complex, well-structured whole, with the three components contributing their singular characteristics. Originating from their own vineyards and outside growers, the variously sourced fruits and different varieties are vinified separately and blended after evaluating their particular attributes.

A deep ruby-red colour, the wine exhibits interplaying fine aromas with spicy and floral notes, enhanced by hints of truffle, liquorice and herbs. On the palate, a rich tapestry of cherry fruit, spice and earthy notes combine with supple tannins and refined acidity to provide elegance and a fine structure.

Matured for 22-24 months in French and American oak barrels, without filtration or fining.

Torbreck

The Torbreck winery was founded in 1994 by David Powell, the owner and principal winemaker, and a lover of French Rhône wines and old Syrah (Shiraz in Australia) vineyards, who deserves to be recognised for having promoted Australian wines, especially those from the Barossa Valley, to a position of high prestige on the international stage. Despite there being no previous vine-growing experience in his family, David left his economics studies to dedicate all his time and energy...
