Wine critics reviewsReviews by Parker and Jancis Robinson

The NV Tio Diego Amontillado Palomino from the Macharnudo vineyard, is fermented in botas, aged biologically for 10 years under flor in a solera separated from Inocente, and with a further five years of oxidative aging. It has a beautiful, perfumed nose of dry flowers, very elegant and clean, subtle, with some saline notes, both in the nose and the palate, where it is balanced, medium-bodied and elegant. A very fine Amontillado, showing superb value for a 15-year-old wine.

Palomino Fino vines grown in Pago de Macharnudo. Tío Diego has ten criaderas and one solera with 70 barrels in each of their tiers. Evolution from biological to oxidative ageing occurs naturally. Due to oxidation and evaporation, alcohol content increases naturally from 16% up to 18%. Average age over 17 years. Less than 1.3 g/l residual sugar. Production limited to 17,800 bottles per year. Tasted blind. Copper brownish colour. This is a tight and extremely concentrated Amontillado, great intensity, expression and saltiness. Extremely complex showing dry fruits, tobacco, cloves, clean oak and touch of yeast. It is a wine I particularly like and an amazing bargain for €12 retail in Spain. I am very astonished and enthusiastic about the finesse of this Tío Diego. VGV - Very good value.

Valdespino (Grupo Estévez)

Valdespino is one of the oldest Sherry firms and owns one of Jerez's most select plots, Macharnudo Alto - emblematic vineyards that this winery has been cultivating for centuries. Known for its traditional style, it is one of the few that carries out production following the classic system of fermentation in butt, with biological ageing taking place under a film of yeast. In 1999, Valdespino was incorporated into the Estevez Group along with Bodegas José Estévez...
