The wine

The Viña Pomal Reserva Centenario is the sort of wine that can be considered an essential Rioja. In a classic yet also contemporary style, produced by one of the region's great wineries, located moreover in Haro's historic Barrio de la Estación, a well-made, most satisfying wine.

It's created from Tempranillo grapes that come exclusively from vineyards which Bodegas Bilbaínas owns in Haro, lying very close to the River Ebro. Once inside the winery and after a careful selection of the grapes, a long maceration process takes place that provides top-quality must. After fermentation, the wine matures in oak barrels for 18 months and rests in bottle for a period of two years before leaving the cellar.

It appears a lovely cherry colour and boasts a fruity, balsamic nose, notably featuring blackberries and liquorice. On the palate it's elegant and complex, as one would expect from a good Rioja Reserva. Long, fine and balsamic. As we said at the beginning: an essential Rioja.

Bodegas Bilbainas was established in 1901, when a group of Bilbao businessmen bought the winery from French producers who had created it in 1859 as a result of the phylloxera crisis in Bordeaux. Reference brand of Rioja red for many years, currently Bodegas Bilbainas is the largest vineyard owner in La Rioja Alta, with more than 250 hectares located in the municipality of Haro. Since its origins, the winery has specialized in farm wines that it produces based on the type of...
