The wine

The Viña Salceda Reserva is a true classic with a modern twist, a red raised on the ancient Riojan tradition yet not turning its back on contemporary times. The oaky hints are there but given less significance than in previous vintages; the new label seems to indicate a little modifying of style for this emblematic winery, conferring a somewhat greater prominence on the fruit.

In its production the only grapes used are those from their own vineyards, aged more than forty years old, and grown on bush vines planted at an altitude of over 400 metres. The special conditions enjoyed by the estate enable the grapes to ripen perfectly, which results in wines with a perfect balance between structure and elegance. Meticulous care is taken in the winery, with all movements carried out by means of gravity, until the wine reaches the cellar's underground galleries where it refines in French and American oak barrels.

Its ruby-red colour precedes an aromatic display of vanilla and scrubland, wild red berries and fine leather. On the palate it exhibits a lovely lactic touch, as well as showing character and complexity as it fills out. The amazing acidity which always seems to accompany Viña Salceda wines rounds it off and balances it magnificently. The aftertaste combines hints of ripe fruit with coffee nuances derived from the barrel's toasting.

Bodegas Viña Salceda

Viña Salceda was founded in Elciego in 1969, a picturesque town in the Rioja Alavesa. Since 1998 it has belonged to the Chivite family, committed to the production of wines of the highest quality which for their part reflect the essence of the terroir. Viña Salceda currently makes four wines with very distinct personalities: two wines of the traditional type, a Crianza and a Reserva, and two wines with a more modern profile: Puente de Salceda and Conde de la Salceda, the latter...
