Bodegas Bilbaínas

Bodegas Bilbainas was established in 1901, when a group of Bilbao businessmen bought the winery from French producers who had created it in 1859 as a result of the phylloxera crisis in Bordeaux. Reference brand of Rioja red for many years, currently Bodegas Bilbainas is the largest vineyard owner in La Rioja Alta, with more than 250 hectares located in the municipality of Haro. Since its origins, the winery has specialized in farm wines that it produces based on the type of soil, orientation and age of the vines, and encompasses three major brands with which it responds to the classic profile of La Rioja and the new trends of the market: La Vicalanda, Viña Pomal and Viña Zaco.

Considered one of the first high expression wines of La Rioja, La Vicalanda was born in 1994 from Tempranillo vines over 30 years old, located in an enclave with excellent geoclimatic characteristics and limestone and stony, poor, deep and well drained. The cultivation of the vineyard combines the long tradition of La Rioja with a more innovative viticulture and winemaking that reduces the aging periods typical of the area, although always exceeding 12 months and with a bottle refinement of at least 24 months. The result is a Reserva and a Gran Reserva, the latter only in exceptional years, which respond to the profile of great La Rioja wines from a contemporary style.

First planted at the beginning of the 20th century, the vineyard of Viña Pomal is today a payment of 120 hectares, the oldest vines of which date back to 1971. Combining traditional practices with others of more advanced viticulture, the winery especially cultivates the Tempranillo variety, but also others such as graciano, garnacha and viura. With this raw material and after careful aging processes in American oak barrels, Viña Pomal offers some of the wines that are most faithful to the classic style of La Rioja.

Named after one of the oldest Tempranillo vineyards run by Bodegas Bilbaínas, Viña Zaco dates back to 1918. It was relaunched in 2021 under the new terroir wine category of Viñedo Singular, meaning it bears the top classification of DOca Rioja wines. A wonderful wine which pays homage to its origins and the unique vineyards it comes from.

Bodegas Bilbaínas belongs to the Codorníu Group, which has many projects in other denominations in Spain and worldwide, totalling more than 3,000 hectares of vineyards in its possession: Raimat (Costers del Segre), Scala Dei (Priorat), Abadia de Poblet (Conca de Barberà), Masia Bach (Catalunya), Legaris (Ribera del Duero), Séptima (Mendoza, Argentina), Artesa (Napa Valley) and Nuviana (Valle del Cinca). Present in all 5 continents and with a team consisting of over 800 personnel, in just the last few years, the Codorníu Group's catalogue has received in excess of 150 international awards for its wines and Cavas.
