Celler Cal Pla

El Celler Cal Pla was founded in 1814, a time when the Priorat region underwent a major transformation in winemaking. Seven generations dedicated to working the vineyards and making wine have allowed the winery to reach the present day with an extraordinary old winery and some centuries-old vineyards. The name Cal Pla refers to the family name and is also the perfect name for wines with such a strong tradition. Cal Pla is the name of the manor house in particular, which has been in the family since the 18th century. This impressive building has the typical Priorat palm-tree vaulted ceiling, interesting slogans painted on the walls, and still has many of the century-old barrels that have been used by several generations to make wine.

The Cal Pla family owns six estates in the municipality of Porrera with a total of 50 hectares of planted land. The varieties they grow are very diverse, from Cariñena and Garnacha to varieties that are rarer in Priorat such as Picapoll Blanc and Trepat Blanc. The winery's capacity is distributed between concrete oil presses (80,000 litres), stainless steel tanks (100,000 litres) and 350 oak barrels of different capacities (225 litres, 300 litres, 500 litres). Grape production is around 140,000 kg, depending on the harvest.

The outstanding work of this winery was recognised with various awards and diplomas back in 1929, but the family firm does not live by tradition alone, but is very aware of the need to innovate. Its current oenologist, Joan Sangenís, studied oenology and began making wine using the most modern techniques, coinciding with the change that occurred throughout the Priorat region. It is not for nothing that the wines of Cal Pla, especially the whites from old vintages, are, year after year, among the most sought-after in the whole region.
