El Coto de Rioja

El Coto is the number one winery to go to for Rioja wines, an option which never fails to please. Their passion and work both on the land and in the winemaking process shines through clearly in the excellence and quality of their wines. The international fame and extraordinary value for money of their delightful wines means they are a reference for many wine-lovers.

Founded in 1970, the El Coto winery in Rioja is the leading brand in Spain for Crianza and Reserva wines. Their wines are also enjoyed in over 50 countries around the world. They own the largest area of vineyards (730 hectares) in Rioja, allowing them to ensure a meticulous control and the regular quality of their vines and wines.

The winery's eight estates in three sub-areas of Rioja are mainly devoted to traditional local grape varieties, which express perfectly the character of the appellation. As well as many hectares of old vines, El Coto also owns the highest-located vineyard in Rioja - Finca Carbonera, at an altitude of 840 metres, where the vines enjoy an ideal climate for white varieties – as well as the largest one, with Finca Los Almendros covering 450 hectares.

The original winery was built in 1976 and extended 20 years later. Since 1990, El Coto has formed part of the Barón de Ley winemaking group and has grown and grown. At present, twelve small winery buildings work alongside each other, each in charge of a different task such as ageing and bottling. Wines are kept in the largest storage cellar in the world with 70,000 barrels. Winemaking at El Coto has seen big changes since their first vintage was released back in 1975, but they still maintain their commitment to traditions. Innovation and creativity have helped the firm move forward, enabling them to produce a wide variety of splendid wines, but the basic connection between winemakers and the vines is still the true essence at the heart of the winery and the key to knowing they can look to the future with optimism and confidence.

El Coto is the favourite Rioja winery of many wine enthusiasts and their wines never fail to please. Affordable and delightful, wines with all the classic character of the Rioja region.
