Fattoria dei Barbi
Fattoria dei Barbi is truly one of the great wineries of Montalcino, and also the company which has produced Brunello wine continuously for the longest time. Brunello is a single-variety Sangiovese wine first created by the Biondi-Santi family in the late 19th century. Alongside Biondi-Santi, Fattoria was also one of the first wineries to be founded in this region, and they started to make Brunello back in 1892.
The Fattoria dei Barbi winery was also a pioneer in other aspects; the first Montalcino firm to export wines to France, in 1817; the first to introduce mail-order sales of Brunello, in 1832; the first in the area to begin developing wine tourism, in 1960; and, as well as being the first local winery to move into organic agriculture, Fattoria added their renowned Brusco dei Barbi wine to the 'Super Tuscan' range back in 1969...
At present the owners, the Cinelli Colombini family, focus their attention on Brunello, one of the best value wines. A transparent wine with its beautiful trademark maroon colour, the Brunello de Fattoria dei Barbi delights the nose with notes of blackberries and black cherries over a background of aromatic herbs, damp soil, and undergrowth. More evolved aromas then appear, such as spices, cinnamon and liquorice. Opulent, powerful, warm, and pleasantly enveloping in the mouth, it offers incredibly silky and well-integrated tannins which are never harsh. A versatile and universal Brunello with an enchanting balsamic finish.
